Fresh off my first “speed networking” event last night thanks to the Murfreesboro Young Professionals organization there were many teaching points taken away.

Nearly 50 participants gathered to sell themselves and their company to the person sitting across the table. The challenge is we only had one minute to do so. Some people thought a minute would seem like a long time to fill but there was not a moment of silence during the non-stop hour and half rotation.

From start to end it was amazing to see the transformation in people’s messages. If you weren’t careful you would assume that the people you spoke to in the beginning weren’t as confident in their message as the people at the end. The reason for this is that maybe they weren’t. For me after repeatedly telling who I am, what I do, and why I matter it didn't take long to get to the essence of my message. The same can be said of the other participants and telling other people over and over why and what you do is a great way to develop your “go-to” statement.

Many people either get bored or think that saying the same message over and over is a bad thing, but last night taught me we all need to be confident in our message no matter how bland it may seem. It is all in the delivery. Remember it's not what you tell somebody it is how you make them feel. The more comfortable your are with communicating your message the more attractive it is to other people.

Don’t feel uncomfortable with self-promotion because as a young professional you are usually the only person that both can and are doing so for yourself. Get in front of as many people as possible and spread your gospel. Realize it is all a part of the process. Some people are natural communicators while others have to struggle, but by the end of the night everyone effectively communicated their message.

The proven 3-step process  is to Discover, Develop, and Decide to Live the NEXTPERT brand and by the end of the night every person in that room was living their own brand confidently. Don’t be afraid to tell your same message over and over until other people cannot possibly forget what it is that you do. Repetition is the key to your reputation. Fail and fail often but know that you are doing so for a better future. Thanks to the MYP for a great evening and I look forward to future opportunities.
