Time and energy are the two most precious things that we get and use every day as humans. Where and whom we choose to spend our time and energy is a direct reflection of our success.

Unfortunately many people get on the wrong bus early on in life and never take the time to stop, reflect, and plan their lives with intention. Are you trading your time and energy for a paycheck or trading your talents and passions for meaning and contribution?

You can get money back but you can’t get your time back.

One of my favorite YouTube clips comes from the late Jim Rohn. He made me think about my lot in life much differently through his Profits vs. Wages message. Are you spending all of your time and energy in an occupation (something that occupies your time and you receive a paycheck for) or in a vocation (which is Latin for voice or calling in life).

I often say the two most important days in a person’s life is the day they are born and the day they discover why. Once you have figured out that all elusive "why" it is important to realize that Profits are always better than Wages. You will have to work on the front-end of your career for very cheap or even free to show your value. Every concept I talk about I LIVE which is the third phase of my 3-step career process---"Live That You Are Better".

Whenever I am not teaching undergrads or in my doctoral journey I try to travel with Coach Micheal Burt on his speaking engagements. For me, this is where the real learning comes from. I don’t ask for any “wages” (aside from a good lunch at Cheddars, thanks Coach) for these trips but instead use every trip as a chance for me to study, learn and grow from the best. The skills include sales, networking, speaking, and being able to pick Coach’s brain on the travels. This is the type of mindset that emerging leaders need to have today to get on the right bus. Stop worrying so much about paychecks and remember that you are investing in yourself.

You can get money back but you can’t get your time back.

If you look at the upper level positions and entrepreneurs you will realize the sacrifice that must be made in the beginning. You don’t work the typical 8-5 job and receive a set amount of money and a feeling of security. But what you do get is 60-80 hour workweeks and the feeling of being alive. That you are doing what you were put here to do. You cannot put a value on the experience you gain during the Profits path. You are growing skills that will distinguish you from others. There is no greater feeling than that of progress that you are advancing confidently in the direction of your dreams.

So begin working part-time on your future today by understanding the Profits vs. Wages mentality. Chase being the best at what you love to do and wake up each day on fire to grow your skills and money will chase you all the way to the bank. Take the time today to stop, reflect, and act on becoming intentional about your career and understand that short-term sacrifice will equal long-term success.
